Golden monkey is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

According to IUCN, golden monkey has a small distribution range and is found only in the Virunga volcanoes shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda's Nyungwe Forest Reserve, mostly in bamboo and bamboo forest mix.
