  Graphics: White paper unveils China's progress in mitigating climate change

  China on Wednesday released a white paper documenting its progress in mitigating climate change and sharing its experience and approaches with the international community.The white paper, titled "Responding to Climate Change: Chinas Policies and Actions," was released by the State Council Information Office.In 2020, China announced new targets and measures for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The government aims to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. Chinas carbon intensity in 2020 was 18.8 percent lower than that of 2015 and 48.4 percent less than that of 2005, which means that China had more than fulfilled its commitment to the international community – to achieve a 40-45 percent reduction in carbon intensity from the 2005 level by 2020. China has pledged to lower its carbon intensity by over 65 percent by 2030 from the 2005 level. China has prioritized the development of non-fossil energy. In 2020, non-fossil energy contributed 15.9 percent to Chinas total energy consumption. China has pledged to increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 25 percent by 2030.China is also rapidly reducing its energy consumption intensity. Data shows that the reduction from 2011 to 2020 reached 28.7 percent, one of the fastest in the world.The new energy industry is witnessing strong growth. The latest revolution in science and technology and industrial transformation has accelerated the growth of the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry. China has topped the world in NEV output and sales for the last six years. In June 2021, the countrys NEV fleet reached 6.03 million.
