Now-elderly residents patrol the canal they helped build six decades ago in Zhenjiang community, Shengji township, Qixingguan district, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, on August 25, 2020.
From 1958 to 1966, the residents built a 13-kilometer-long canal with steel chisels into a cliff hundreds of meters high.
Flowing water was drawn from the canal, and barren hills turned to paradise.
After the construction of the canal, the community successfully got rid of relying on nature for food, and embraced a brighter life with satisfactory production.
In order to make better use of the water, the residents have made great efforts in farmland construction.
In a few years, they have built thousands of rice fields, doubling the planting area.
Today, the canal irrigates more than 280 hectares of farmland, benefiting 3,000 residents.
