Farmers have been battling against the airport ever since the construction of the airport was proposed in the 1960s. Takao Shito is one of the farmers who told AFP, “These are pieces of land farmed by three generations for nearly a century, by my grandfather, my father and myself. I want to continue living here and farm.” /VCG Photo

Farmers near the airport area said the reason why they wouldn’t like to relocate is not the compensation but the life they have been pursuing. “I have fun growing vegetables here. This is my life: growing vegetables on this soil. They taste different,” Shito said. /VCG Photo

Another farmer, Nobuharu Ito has also protested the construction of the airport for some four decades and told that he was moved by Shito’s commitment to his land and life and will still support him. /VCG Photo

The airport is still planning to build a third runway for the upcoming Olympics in 2020, which would affect some farmers. The airport authorities are trying to negotiate a deal with the farmers. /VCG Photo
