Malaysian indigenous tribe holds ancient ritual

Puja Pantai, an ancient ritual of Malaysia's Mah Meri tribe, was carried out on Saturday on the island of Pulau Carey. /VCG Photo

During the ritual, people pray to the spirits of the seas, wear traditionally carved masks and perform tarian jo-oh (jungle dance) and tarian topeng (mask dance). /VCG Photo

Each year, the Puja Pantai festival starts after the Chinese New Year. According to the Malaysian Insight, it is the last traditional ritual that is still practiced by the Mah Meri. /VCG Photo

The Mah Meri tribe, known as the "Masked Men of Malaysia," is native to west Peninsular Malaysia and one of the 18 indigenous communities in the peninsula. /VCG Photo
