The Recycled Island Foundation together with the Audi Environmental Foundation created the park. The foundations collected plastic waste from the New Neuse River with collecting basins and litter traps which were installed along the river and then sorted them out to make them into floating islands. /VCG Photo

According to the official website of the park, 98 percent of the plastic waste is found in the upper meter water level and the waste includes plastic wrappings, foils, bottles and cans, and bags. /VCG Photo
