One of China's most popular tourist sites is the Palace Museum, or the Forbidden City, in Beijing. So it's no wonder that travelers are flocking in large numbers to the ancient imperial palace during the ongoing week-long National Day holiday. (Photos: VCG)
On the second day of the public holiday, queues stretching for hundreds of meters were formed in front of the Meridian Gate, the main entrance of the palace, as tens of thousands of tourists waited for hours to visit the site.
During the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival last month, the Palace Museum received over 80,000 tourists in one day, according to People's Daily.
To minimize the inconvenience caused by the huge number of visitors and reduce the pressure on ticketing booths outside the entrance, the historic site decided to go completely digital last year. Tourists planning to tour the former imperial complex have to book their tickets in advance on the Palace Museum's official website.
