A medicine box, a boat and a bicycle… These are the three treasures of village doctor Tian Jun. Tian cycles to work at his health clinic on an isolated island of 1,000 Mudundao villagers in Bancheng town, Sihong county of Jiangsu Province.

He graduated from healthcare college in 2001 and turned down bigger offers of jobs in the county to go work in Mudundao.

With a monthly salary of more than 2,300 yuan ($340), Tian leads a hand-to-mouth existence.

Some suggested he quit and raise crabs in Hongze Lake, but Tian didn't take it. "There are 320 families on the island," he says. "I keep the physical condition of each family in my mind."

He rows off the island maybe two or three times a year for medical emergencies. The nearest hospital is an hour by boat and car, meaning Tian’s clinic is the only show in town.

"I will keep working here until I can't do so anymore," he says.
