A closer look at Beijing Winter Olympic medals

According to the Corporation, there are 18 techniques and 20 rounds of quality inspection required to make one medal. It takes eight hours for a master to polish a gold medal under microscope.

The medal is designed based on Chinese ancient jade concentric circle pendants. The five rings circle around the center, echoing the Chinese culture emphasizing harmony between heaven and earth, and unity of people. The five rings also symbolize the Olympic spirit.
