Barcelona have announced the departure of sporting director Eric Abidal, just one day after sacking head coach Quique Setien.

"FC Barcelona and Éric Abidal have reached an agreement for the ending of the contract that united the two parties," said a club statement.

"The Club would publicly like to thank Éric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication and the close and positive nature of his relationship with all aspects of the blaugrana family."

Abidal has been in a technical role since 2018 and took on the job of sporting director at the start of the 2019-2020 season.

The Frenchman’s departure comes following a pledge by the club for "a wider restructuring of the first team" following the humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final stage.

Barcelona have had a torrid season, also losing the La Liga title to arch rivals Real Madrid.

Reports in Spain indicate that the club is looking to Ronald Koeman to fill the vacant manager position.
