Halep, the 2019 champion, is staying on course for a clash with Amanda Anisimova, who defeated Wimbledon debutant Harmony Tan of France 6-2, 6-3.

Australian Ajla Tomljanovic ousted French veteran Alize Cornet 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 while 17th seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan beat Petra Martic from Croatia 7-5, 6-3, reaching her first Wimbledon quarterfinal.

In the men's singles event, Rafael Nadal continued his bid for a third Wimbledon crown as he sealed a 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (8/6) win against Dutch 21st seed Botic van de Zandschulp to reach the Wimbledon quarters for the eighth time.

Nadal will set up a meeting with 11th seed Taylor Fritz for a place in the semi-finals.

Six-time champion Novak Djokovic has already reserved a seat in the last eight after defeating Dutch wild card Tim van Rijthoven 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday.

Top seed Djokovic will face 20-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner, who has never won a grass court match before this Wimbledon.

Nadal and Djokovic are joined in the last eight by Australian Nick Kyrgios, who fought hard to edge Wimbledon debutant American Brandon Nakashima in five sets.

The 40th-ranked Kyrgios claimed a stormy third-round victory against Greek fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and he is seen as a major threat to Nadal, whom he beat on his way to the quarterfinals in 2014.
