Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin capped a thrilling week at the ITTF Men's and Women's World Cup, each achieving landmark victories at the Galaxy Arena in China's Macao SAR (Special Administrative Region) on Sunday.
Sun etched her name in the record books as the first female player to clinch three consecutive World Cup singles titles, further cementing her dominance in the sport of table tennis.
The World No. 1 demonstrated her prowess in the final, defeating second-ranked compatriot Wang Manyu 4-1 (11-9, 11-8, 13-11, 8-11, 11-7).
"I didn't go into this thinking too much about winning three titles in a row or making history. I just wanted to take it one match at a time, give it everything I've got and enjoy every game," said Sun.
"Every time Manyu and I play, we're neck and neck. It's always a battle – intense and exciting. So today, I just let go of the pressure and tried to enjoy it. This World Cup run in Macao gave me a lot to learn from and think about," she added. "I hope I can take this win with me to London for the World Team Championships – that's the biggest event of the year. I want to carry this title and just keep going."
On the men's side, World No. 1 Wang prevailed in an intense showdown with 18-year-old Japanese sensation Sora Matsushima, currently ranked eighth in the world.
A gripping contest that tested his physical and mental endurance saw the 25-year-old top seed triumph for a nail-biting 4-3 victory (9-11, 18-16, 11-8, 11-13, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8), marking his first men's singles World Cup crown.
"First of all, I want to thank myself for never giving up, with the fans here supporting me," said Wang after his win. "And I especially want to thank the Chinese national table tennis team. And to my fans – I'm so happy I get to say this again – I didn't let you down this time either."
