In a gripping first-round encounter at the French Open, China's Wang Xinyu battled past Austria's Lilli Tagger, overcoming a fierce challenge to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. This was the first meeting between the two players, and while Wang started slowly, she quickly found her rhythm to claim the opening set.
The 18-year-old Tagger, last year's junior champion, roared back in the second set, showcasing her tenacity and forcing a decisive third frame. With the match hanging in the balance, the final set was a rollercoaster of emotions. Tagger's resilience shone through, yet Wang's aggressive tactics and her greater experience on the senior Grand Slam stage began to make the difference.
As the match intensified, Wang held her nerve, ultimately sealing the victory 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. This win represents the 24-year-old's 20th Grand Slam main-draw victory, a notable milestone in her career. In the second round, she is set to face Germany's Tamara Korpatsch.
In other matchups, compatriot Wang Xiyu cruised past Danka Kovinic in straight sets, initially dominating with a 6-3 win in the first set. However, Kovinic fought back in the second set, attempting to level the score. Despite carrying a thigh injury, Wang regained control, ultimately winning 6-3, 6-1. Up next for her is the USA's Hailey Baptiste.
