Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva emerged victorious at the French Open, capturing her first Grand Slam title on Saturday with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Poland's Maja Chwalinska in the women's singles final.
The 19-year-old Andreeva has swiftly ascended through the ranks of tennis, showcasing her prowess on the Parisian clay over the course of just four appearances at Roland Garros.
After making her Grand Slam debut as a qualifier in 2023, reaching the semifinals the following season and bowing out in the quarterfinals last spring, the World No. 8 has now lifted the prestigious Coupe Suzanne-Lenglen with a convincing victory on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Chwalinska, a qualifier ranked 114th in the world prior to the tournament, also enjoyed a remarkable journey. The 24-year-old defeated several higher-ranked contenders, including China's Zheng Qinwen in the opening round, before her fairytale campaign was halted by the resolute Andreeva.
Meanwhile, in the girls junior singles final, China's Sun Xinran encountered an excruciating end to her winning streak after succumbing to Russia's Alisa Oktiabreva in straight sets. The title match marked a repeat showdown between the two, with Oktiabreva once again besting Sun. After taking the first set, the 17-year-old Russian maintained her dominance in the second, ultimately wrapping up the title 6-2, 6-1.
Despite the loss, the 15-year-old Sun will still rise to the top of the junior girls world rankings in Monday's update. Reflecting on her performance, she acknowledged several areas of her game that need further improvement.
"I think the main issue was my serving and returning, along with some problems with power. She kept putting pressure on me the whole time," Sun admitted. "But still, I don't want to make excuses for myself. I just need to see where I did not do well and keep working hard for next time."
