Top seeds Jia/Zhang among Chinese first round winners at Australian Badminton Open

SYDNEY, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top seeds Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian advanced to the second round of the women's doubles with a dominant win on the opening day of the Australian Badminton Open here on Tuesday.

Jia and Zhang, the women's doubles champions at the Singapore Open in May, defeated Australian duo Sydney and Victoria Tjonadi 21-7, 21-5 in 22 minutes on Tuesday evening at Sydney's State Sports Centre.

They will be joined in the second round of the women's doubles draw by compatriots Wang Tingge and Luo Yi, who beat eighth seeds Yang Ching-Tun and Chang Ching-Hui of Chinese Taipei 21-14, 16-21, 21-17.

In the men's doubles draw, Chinese fourth seeds Chen Boyang and Liu Yi advanced to the second round by defeating South Korea's Kim Gi-jung and Kim Sa-rang 21-14, 21-14, while Huang Di and Liu Yang beat Singapore's Kubo Junsuke and Wesley Koh 21-16, 21-17.

Bao Lijing and Cao Zihan were the only Chinese pairing to lose on the opening day of the tournament, falling to Chinese Taipei's sixth seeds Hsu Ya-Ching and Sung Yu-Hsuan in three games.

The first round of the men's and women's doubles will continue on Wednesday, with the mixed doubles and men's and women's singles first rounds also getting underway.
