Earlier this week, on Monday, FIDE asked the CFR to provide proof of compliance with a ruling issued by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The verdict ordered the CFR to halt all chess activities and events in Sevastopol and the regions of Crimea, Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia within a 90-day period starting in March. Non-compliance could lead to a three-year suspension.

"Having considered the information presented, the FIDE Council notes that the requirements stipulated by the court ruling have not been fulfilled within the prescribed timeframe. The Council resolves to impose the sanction of immediate temporary membership suspension on the respective member federation," FIDE said in an official release.

FIDE reaffirmed that the decision only targets the CFR and does not restrict individual players' eligibility to compete under applicable FIDE regulations.
