LOS ANGELES, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Canada celebrated its historic progression to the FIFA World Cup round of 16 on Sunday after edging South Africa 1-0, with goalscorer Stephen Eustaquio promising the team's next opponent its toughest test of the tournament.
Eustaquio struck in second-half stoppage time to send the co-host into the last 16 for the first time.
"We worked a lot to get this victory. We really wanted to give this win to all the Canadians," said Eustaquio, who was named player of the match.
"We just kept believing and kept pushing. It was an amazing goal."
"When I shot, I felt everyone shot with me. Everybody put a little bit of power on it and it went to the back of the net, so I'm very happy."
Canada will face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the round of 16 in Houston.
"We will try to make Morocco and the Netherlands watch our game and feel that, if they go through, they're going to get the hardest game they're going to face in this World Cup," Eustaquio said.
Canada finished second in Group B after drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina, thrashing Qatar 6-0 and losing 2-1 to Switzerland.
Finishing second meant Canada had to leave home soil for its round-of-32 match after playing its group-stage games in Vancouver.
"We were disappointed to have to leave Canada, given the fanfare and passion around everything for the World Cup and our team," Canada coach Jesse Marsch said.
"But the guys quickly refocused and knew that this was a massive opportunity."
Marsch said his side was comfortable playing in the United States because of its experience in recent editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Copa America and international friendlies.
Canada's next opponent will be either 2022 semifinalist Morocco or three-time World Cup runner-up the Netherlands.
Marsch said his side would adapt its approach against whichever team advances.
"I feel like it's a free hit, and we're going to go after it and do everything we can to see if we can find a way to get a win," he said.
