Folarin Balogun scored his third goal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, before being sent off in the second half, and Malik Tillman converted a free kick to give 10-man co-host USA a 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday night to advance to the round of 16.
Balogun dominated the first half with his goal and several other chances that helped the USA control the match early on, but the Americans had to scramble after going a man down in the 64th minute, following his foul against Tarik Muharemovic.
Tillman helped seal the triumph when he scored on a free kick from just outside the box in the 82nd minute, blasting in a shot off the hand of Bosnia and Herzegovina goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.
That gave the USA just its second World Cup knockout phase victory. The Americans reached the semifinals at the inaugural tournament in 1930, then topping their group and prevailing in a round-of-16 matchup against Mexico in 2002.
The win over the Bosnians in the last 32 at this year's expanded competition sets up a matchup on Monday in Seattle against Belgium, with the USA hoping to go further on home soil.
This game in the San Francisco suburb of Santa Clara was played less than 20 miles from the site of the American team's first knockout round match in the modern era, which saw the home side lose 1-0 against heavily-favored Brazil at Stanford University Stadium in Palo Alto in 1994.
The triumph broke a 10-game losing streak for the USA against European teams dating back to a meeting with England in the 2022 World Cup. It also marked the first victory in the global football showpiece for the Americans against a European side since prevailing over Portugal in their opener at the 2002 edition.
