Tang Qianting has clinched gold in the women's 50m breaststroke final with a time of 29.67 seconds at the Pan Pacific Championships in the United States.

This victory marks a historic moment, as it is China's first gold at this championship in 29 years. The last was achieved in 1997 by Le Jingyi in the women's 50m freestyle.

Entering the meet with the top three times in the world for 2026, Tang's rise to the top of the podium was expected. She delivered on her formidable promise, showcasing her prowess at the Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine, California.

American swimmers filled the remaining medal spots, with McKenzie Siroky securing silver in 29.70 seconds, just shy of her personal best of 29.64. Skyler Smith impressed by dipping below 30 seconds for the first time, clocking in at 29.90 after improving from 30.4 in the morning heats to 30.08.

Tang's victory cements her status as a dominant force in women's sprint breaststroke. She previously won silver at the Paris Olympics in the 100m breaststroke and has also earned multiple silvers in the 50m breaststroke at both the 2024 and 2025 World Championships, alongside a gold in the 100m at the 2024 event.

Following her success, Tang was full of gratitude, saying, "I'm thankful to my coach and team. The audience was incredibly enthusiastic; the pool presented a challenge for me, and I am beyond excited to have won the championship."
