WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) - China's Wu Yibing and Wang Xinyu both claimed straight-sets victories to start their campaign at the 2026 US Open on Sunday.

Wu, 26, swept Australia's Adam Walton 7-6 (2), 6-2, 7-5 to reach the men's singles second round.

"I didn't play well at the beginning. I was hesitant to go for my shots from the baseline," Wu reflected. "Winning some key points in the tie-breaker was very decisive. I still need to be more relaxed."

Wu will face the winner between 30th seed Matteo Arnaldi of Italy and Australia's James Duckworth.

In the women's singles first round, Wang, 24, had a smooth start to see off Colombia's Emiliana Arango 6-4, 6-2 in 78 minutes, while Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai, 37, lost to 31st seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada 6-3, 6-2.

"I will strive to play my own game. No matter who is on the other side of the court, I will try to be as aggressive as possible," noted Wang, who will meet the winner of an all-Russian tie between Anna Kalinskaya and Anna Blinkova.

On Monday, China's Zheng Qinwen, Wang Xiyu and Shang Juncheng will take to the court in the first round.
