Buyunchaokete made the most of his second chance at the US Open by earning a first Grand Slam main-draw victory, while fellow Chinese player Wu Yibing advanced to the men's singles third round in New York.
Buyunchaokete produced a major upset in the first round, sweeping past Spanish 12th seed Rafael Jodar 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.
The world No. 124 had initially missed out on a place in the main draw after losing 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to Federico Cina in the final round of qualifying. However, Thanasi Kokkinakis' withdrawal handed Buyunchaokete a place as a lucky loser and with that came another opportunity to extend his stay in New York.
The 24-year-old took full advantage against world No. 13 Jodar, who is regarded as one of the best up-and-coming players after jumping from outside the Top 100 to the brink of the Top 10 this season. Buyunchaokete controlled the match on serve, winning 84 percent of his first-serve points and 69 percent behind his second delivery, while not allowing his opponent a single break-point opportunity.
Rain interrupted the contest, but it did little to halt Buyunchaokete's momentum. He converted seven of his 16 break points and conceded just four games across the three sets to wrap up his maiden Grand Slam main-draw win on his seventh attempt.
Buyunchaokete will next meet American wildcard Michael Zheng, who defeated Hungary's Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round. The winner will advance to the last 32.

Wu has already secured his place in the third round after overcoming Australia's James Duckworth 7-5, 6-3, 6-1.
The opening set proved the toughest for Wu, but the Chinese player broke late to take it 7-5 before increasingly asserting control over the contest.
Duckworth's errors mounted in the second set as Wu moved two sets ahead with a 6-3 win. The 26-year-old then dominated the third, dropping just one game to complete another straight-sets victory.
Wu has yet to lose a set at this year's US Open. He began his campaign by defeating another Australian, Adam Walton, 7-6(2), 6-2, 7-5 before following it with his victory over Duckworth.
The result also marked Wu's first appearance in the US Open third round since his breakthrough campaign in 2022.

In the women's singles, China's Wang Xinyu saw her run come to an end after losing 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 to 21st seed Anna Kalinskaya in the second round.
Wang led 4-2 in the opening set before Kalinskaya fought back to take it 7-5. The Chinese player responded emphatically in the second, breaking her opponent twice on her way to a 6-2 win and forcing the match into a deciding set.
Kalinskaya regained the initiative in the third and eventually completed the victory after two hours and 22 minutes. Wang finished the match with 39 winners to Kalinskaya's 22 and won 95 points to her opponent's 94, but converted only three of her 11 break-point opportunities.
Wang had defeated Colombia's Emiliana Arango 6-4, 6-2 in the first round before her exit.
