Asian Games | Zhang scores 22 as China romps past Indonesia to reach women's basketball knockouts

Center Zhang Ziyu scored 22 points on her Asian Games debut to lead China to a 110-41 rout of Indonesia in the women's basketball group stage on Monday.

Zhang was rested for China's opening group game against Thailand to recover from her recent stint at the FIBA Women's World Cup. She played 13 minutes Monday, shooting 10-for-13 from the field for 22 points.

China head coach Gong Luming praised Zhang's progress.

"From having relatively simple positioning in the past, to being able to participate in team plays, and now being able to pass back out and re-post, including her facilitating passes, these are all visible skills she has developed," Gong said.

Center Liu Yutong added 20 points and 10 rebounds for China, followed by 17 points from Luo Xinyu.

With two consecutive group-stage victories, China finished first in its group and advanced to the knockout round.

"The first task at the Asian Games is to adjust to the time difference, and the second is to adjust our tactical play, because the styles of our opponents are different. A smooth preliminary round doesn't mean the upcoming games will be just as smooth. We must strive to perform excellently in crucial matches like the semifinals and finals," Gong said.

The women's basketball quarterfinals at the Asian Games take place on Thursday.
