China's Qiu wins uneven bars gold, Lan retains rings title

China collected two gold and three bronze medals on the first day of individual gymnastics finals at the 2026 Asian Games on Thursday, with Qiu Qiyuan winning the women's uneven bars and Lan Xingyu retaining his men's rings title.

Qiu, the first gymnast to compete in the uneven bars final, delivered a routine with a difficulty score of 6.7 to earn 15.100 points, a day after falling from the apparatus in the women's team final.

Teammate Zhang Qingying scored 14.233 to move into second place before Japan's Misa Nishiyama overtook her with 14.433 to take silver.

"It was really a lot of pressure after I made mistakes on the same routine in my previous competitions," Qiu said. "I performed today's routine well, and the pressure has been released."

Lan was the only one of the eight rings finalists with a difficulty score of 6.0. He scored 14.933 to beat Japan's Kiichi Kaneta by 0.200 points, securing his second consecutive Asian Games title and China's seventh straight gold in the event.

Teammate Zou Jingyuan took bronze with 14.600.

In the women's vault, South Korea's Yeo Seojeong won gold, DPR Korea's An Chang-ok took silver and China's Du Siyu claimed bronze.

Uzbekistan's Oksana Chusovitina, competing in her seventh Asian Games at age 51, finished fifth.

Battling fatigue and injury after competing in the team and all-around events over the previous two days, China's Sun Wei made several errors in the men's floor exercise final, scoring 10.566 and finishing outside the medals.

The Philippines' Carlos Edriel Yulo won the men's floor exercise title, while Uzbekistan's Utkirbek Juraev took gold on pommel horse.
