Mallorca goalkeeper Cuellar suffers head injury in training ground accident

MADRID, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Mallorca goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar is in hospital after suffering a serious head injury in an accident at the club's training ground.

The 42-year-old, the club's third-choice goalkeeper, was injured before Monday's training session when "a large structure" in the canteen at the Ciutat Esportiva Antonio Asensio collapsed onto him, the club said.

"This morning, Ivan 'Pichu' Cuellar suffered a serious head injury after a large structure, which formed part of the decor in the dining room at the Ciutat Esportiva collapsed," the statement said. "The player has been taken to hospital for treatment and will remain under observation for the next 24 hours."

The club gave no further details.

Cuellar's career has spanned more than 20 years, with spells at Atletico Madrid, Sporting Gijon, Eibar and Leganes. He joined Mallorca in 2023 as experienced backup and has made six first-team appearances over the past three seasons.

Mallorca is currently sixth in the Spanish second division as it seeks promotion back to the top flight following a 1-0 home defeat to Almeria on Sunday.
