BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and Swedish Table Tennis Association confirmed on Wednesday that the 2020 ITTF Swedish International Open will not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tournament is scheduled between November 30 and December 5 in Helsingborg and was designed to open the door for all professional paddlers to return to international action.
But it has been canceled due to new restrictions implemented by the Public Health Agency of Sweden in consideration of increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases across Sweden and the rest of Europe.
"We made a very brave attempt to resume the international table tennis action here in Sweden and the event had attracted a lot of interest with several entries. However, health must always come first and, with the recent increase of COVID-19 cases and new restrictions applied by the Public Health Agency of Sweden, unfortunately, we simply cannot stage this event anymore," said Petra Sorling, Chairman of the Swedish Table Tennis Association.
Some of the sport's biggest stars will participate in the #RESTART series in China later this month. The series consists of the Women's World Cup (November 8-10), the Men's World Cup (November 13-15) and the ITTF Finals (November 19-22).
