China's new carrier rocket Long March-8 makes maiden flight

China successfully launched the Long March-8 rocket from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in South China's Hainan Province at 12:37 pm Tuesday (Beijing Time).

The five experimental satellites carried by the medium-lift rocket have accurately entered the pre-selected orbit.

The Long March-8 rocket has a total length of 50.3 meters, with a takeoff mass of 356 tonnes. With two stages and two boosters, Long March-8 rocket is a new type of rocket that uses module design and can be prepared in a short time, making it competitive for commercial launch.

It has a payload capacity of five tons to sun-synchronous orbit and 2.8 tons to geostationary transfer orbit, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).
