China will boost development in the domestic network security sector to improve the country's cyber security, according to a draft guideline released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Friday.

The goal is to cultivate a group of internationally competitive enterprises with core technologies and annual revenues above two billion yuan ($280 million) by 2025, the MIIT said in the document.

The ministry expects the domestic network security industry to exceed 200 billion yuan (about 28 billion U.S. dollars) by that time.

"The nature of network security is technological confrontation, and to ensure that, strong technological and industrial support is indispensable," the guideline said.

It outlines five major tasks for the industry: Making breakthroughs in core technologies, innovating service models, jointly building the industrial ecosystem of network security, vigorously promoting the application of network security technologies, and accelerating the construction of relative infrastructure.

It also requires companies to be demand driven and better meet the network security needs of key sectors such as finance, energy, telecom, transportation, and e-government.

The companies were also instructed to strengthen the risk analysis and resolution in emerging areas such as 5G, the next generation of internet, industrial internet, Internet of Things, and Internet of Vehicles.

The draft guideline is open to public comments until October 11, 2019.
