The latest achievements in 5G development and the newest 5G application scenarios around the world have been displayed at an exhibition in Beijing, as part of the first World 5G Convention that kicked off on Nov. 20, Beijing Youth Daily reported Thursday.

The convention has gathered global scientists in the field of information communication, world-renowned enterprises in both the upstream and downstream of the 5G industry, as well as users and well-known investors.

Various participants in the event carried out exchanges and discussions on such topics as cutting-edge technologies, trends, and innovative applications in 5G.

An exhibition focused on 5G development and application is currently on display at the convention, showcasing the newest achievements and cases in six major exhibition zones covering development achievements, smart city and smart life, smart transportation, smart manufacturing, smart medical services, and high-definition videos.

Exhibition booths of China’s three major telecom operators, China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile, who are the main participants of the convention and the constructors and leaders of 5G, have drawn extensive attention.

In the China Telecom booth, visitors raced to experience a remote driving platform. A man in the driver’s seat moved the steering wheel in what looked like a computer game. However, the screen in front of him showed the real-time view of a goods warehouse in Nanjing, capital of east China’s Jiangsu Province.

Remote driving technologies can be used to make self-driving engineering vehicles in such areas as mine lots, thus helping guarantee the security of workers and deal with accidents in a timely manner, according to a member of staff with China Telecom at the company’s exhibition booth.

China Unicom showcased its AR (augmented reality)-based personal information identification system, which has been put into use at its exhibition booth featuring the smart airport. With a pair of 5G-based glasses, staff can obtain a person's passenger information via facial recognition.

China Mobile has set up three exhibition areas featuring basic applications of 5G, 5G-based personal applications, and applications of 5G in the smart city.

The company showcased the latest cases of 5G, such as standalone (SA) 5G networking modes, 5G-based remote driving, and application of 5G network in smart medical services.

Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area in Yizhuang, Daxing District of Beijing, which is also where the convention is slated to run from Nov. 20 to 23, has attracted full attention for its favorable 5G industrial ecology.

The area is home to nearly 100 enterprises in both the upstream and downstream of the 5G industry, according to an executive of the area, disclosing that ten major application scenarios of 5G network, including 5G-based smart factories and smart transportation, are expected to become a reality in the near future.

The first World 5G Convention is also an invitation to domestic and foreign guests at the convention, said the executive, explaining that they hope to invite these guests to join the area in the construction of city scenarios with 5G-based industrial ecology and innovative applications.
