Omicron COVID-19 booster cuts hospitalization in over 65: latest study

Among them, 85,314, or 14 percent, had received it."Hospitalization due to COVID-19 occurred in 6 bivalent recipients and 297 participants who did not" receive it, the study said. "Death due to COVID-19 occurred in 1 bivalent recipient and 73 participants who did not."Though the 86 percent drop in mortality was statistically borderline because of the relatively low death rates in the country, it was nonetheless significant, the researchers said."Participants who received the bivalent vaccine had lower hospitalization and mortality rates due to COVID-19 than non-recipients up to 70 days after vaccination."While the bivalent vaccine targets the original strain and its BA.4/BA.5 Omicron subvariant, scientists have been closely watching another Omicron subvariant, XBB.1.5, which has been rapidly spreading in the U.S.

First carrier rockets of the year blast off

China launched two carrier rockets on Monday, its first space missions for 2023.Photo: China DailyA 60.1-meter Long March 7A rocket blasted off at 6 am at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province and soon deployed the Shijian 23 and Shiyan 22A and 22B experimental satellites into their orbits, according to a news release from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, the nations leading space contractor.The Shijian 23 is tasked with conducting in-orbit scientific experiments and technology demonstrations while the Shiyan 22A and 22B will be used to monitor and survey the space environment and verify new technologies.This was the fifth launch of the Long March 7A model. The Shijian 23 is the heaviest spacecraft the rocket has ever carried.The Long March 7A has a liftoff weight of 573 metric tons and a core-stage diameter of 3.35 meters. It is capable of placing a 7-ton spacecraft into geosynchronous transfer orbit.The rocket is tasked with sending satellites into high-altitude orbits such as the geosynchronous transfer and inclined geosynchronous orbits. It can also be used to carry out missions to the moon, Mars or asteroids.The launch marked the first space activity for China in 2023, and the 459th flight of the Long March rocket family.On Monday afternoon, Galactic Energy, a private rocket maker in Beijing, carried out the fifth flight mission of its CERES 1 rocket to deploy five small satellites into orbit.The CERES 1 Y5 rocket blasted off at 1:04 pm at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern Chinas Gobi Desert and placed the satellites into a preset orbit, the company said in a news release.Galactic Energy has achieved five successive successes in orbital launch, far outperforming other private competitors. Americas first woman in space, Sally Ride, released the satellite into orbit using the shuttles robot arm. That same mission also featured the first spacewalk by a U.S. woman: Kathryn Sullivan. CES 2023: Startups aim to reduce global food waste

Their ripeness window is so narrow that a slew of memes poke fun at the fine art of deciding when to eat them.Dutch entrepreneur Marco Snikkers aims to solve that problem with an avocado scanner unveiled this week at the CES tech show in Las Vegas and designed for use in supermarkets. It uses optical sensing and AI technology to determine ripeness, displaying on a screen whether an avocado is firm or ready to eat.Snikkers startup, OneThird, isnt just trying to reduce frustration in the kitchen. According to the United Nations, about one-third of food is wasted globally. That means all the carbon emitted to grow, ship and distribute that food was for naught.“That’s a huge problem,” Snikkers said. “That’s a trillion dollar issue for our world and it has a huge impact on C02 emissions and water usage.”OneThird is one of several start-ups at this year’s CES working to solve different components of the problem, from helping the food industry limit what it throws away to offering rapid composting solutions to help keep food scraps out of methane-producing landfills.OneThird already works with growers, distributors and others along the supply chain to predict the shelf life of avocados, tomatoes, strawberries and blueberries. It will further expand its ability to determine ripeness for more produce later this year, aiming to help reduce the amount of food that is wasted around the world. US approves new drug to treat Alzheimer's disease

(File photo: AFP)The FDA approval of the drug, Leqembi, also known as lecanemab, comes just days after the regulatory agency was harshly criticized in a congressional report for its green-lighting of another Alzheimers drug, Aduhelm.And it was granted despite trial results showing the monoclonal antibody treatment carries risks of brain swelling and bleeding.Both drugs were approved through an accelerated process that allows the FDA to fast-track approval of drugs for serious conditions where there is an unmet medical need.Leqembi and Aduhelm, which were jointly developed by Japans Eisai and Biogen of the United States, "represent an important advancement in the ongoing fight to effectively treat Alzheimers disease," the FDA said in a statement."Alzheimers disease immeasurably incapacitates the lives of those who suffer from it and has devastating effects on their loved ones," Billy Dunn of the FDAs Center for Drug Evaluation and Research said in a statement.Leqembi, Dunn said, is "the latest therapy to target and affect the underlying disease process of Alzheimers, instead of only treating the symptoms of the disease."Approximately 6.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimers, which is characterized by memory loss and declining mental acuity.Preliminary data from a trial of Leqembi was released in September and found it slowed cognitive decline in Alzheimers patients by 27 percent.The phase three trial involved nearly 1,800 people, divided between those given the drug and given a placebo, and ran over 18 months.The complete trial data, published in the New England Journal ...

China completes successful test run of rocket engine for space program

(Photo: CFP)At 10:47 a.m., the oxyhydrogen engine for the Long March 3A rockets series was activated for 120 seconds as scheduled and then switched off, successfully completing the high-altitude simulation test run. Following the test run, the rocket engine will be shipped and installed into a rocket, preparing for a later space launch mission. "The engine we tested is numbered YF-75. It is a liquid-propellant engine using oxygen and hydrogen and is mainly used for Long March 3A rockets and above and used to launch high-orbit satellites," said Chai Dongdong, deputy director of the 101 Institute of Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology. "The success of the engine test kicked off a good start for Chinas space projects in the new year and marks the unfolding of the heavy scientific research missions ahead," Chai said.The test bed used this time is one specially designed for Long March 3A rockets series oxyhydrogen engines and the countrys first low-temperature, all-system, high-altitude simulation test bed. The test bed has made great contributions for Chinas moon exploration, BeiDou Navigation Satellite System and other missions since it was put into use in 1992.

China grants market approval to self-developed ECMO device for severe COVID-19 cases

Ltd., a Sino-foreign joint venture based in southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.Chinabridge said on its website that this ECMO device is its main product, whose development began when the company was established in 2018.ECMO is listed as a treatment in Chinas COVID-19 control plan. Known as the "ultimate lifesaver" for patients with severe cardiac and respiratory issues, it can temporarily replace the functions of the heart and lungs.The machine operates by pumping venous blood from the body, artificially oxygenating it, and then pumping it back into the arteries.The initial coronavirus variants attack peoples lung and cause pneumonia, even causing death in severe cases.Though the recent variants mainly attack the upper airway, there is still a chance for the lungs to get affected.
