On October 22, 2015, during a state visit to the UK, President Xi Jinping met with then British Prime Minister David Cameron at Chequers, the Prime Minister's country retreat.

Upon arrival, Cameron greeted Xi, and the two leaders proceeded to the retreat's lawn to plant an oak tree symbolizing China-UK friendship. They then held talks for four and a half hours, during which they exchanged in-depth views on governance, state affairs, bilateral relations, the international situation and other topics.

Following the meeting, Xi and Cameron were driven to a nearby town to experience the local pub culture. Cameron hosted Xi for a quintessentially British evening at The Plough in Cadsden, a 16th-century country inn in the Chiltern Hills of Buckinghamshire, where they enjoyed fish and chips with two pints of Greene King IPA for about 20 minutes. Later, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, joined Cameron and his wife, Samantha, back at Chequers for talks and dinner.

Chequers, the official country retreat for British prime ministers since 1921, is located near Ellesborough in Buckinghamshire at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. Xi is the first Chinese president to visit Chequers, and by hosting him there and at the pub, Cameron demonstrated warm, personal hospitality toward the Chinese leader.
