US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the US military had carried out a secret mission to support commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, claiming the effort enabled more than 100 million barrels of oil and over 200 commercial ships to travel through the strait.

"This effort has resulted in more than 100 MILLION Barrels of Oil making its way through the Strait, and into the Open Market," Trump wrote on his social media platform.

Trump said he had directed the US military last month to carry out the operation in support of oil tankers and other commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump described the operation as a "wildly successful effort" and argued that it showed that the United States, not Iran, controls the Strait of Hormuz.

Reports had previously indicated that the US military was escorting commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a May 31 report by The New York Times, US Central Command had guided around 70 commercial ships through the strait during the preceding three weeks.

The report, citing US officials, said most of the vessels had turned off their transponders to avoid detection while transiting the waterway.
