Located in the suburb of Mudanjiang City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, is the beautiful Jingpo Lake.

It is the largest alpine lava barrier lake in the country, and possibly the second largest in the world.

It was created by volcanic eruptions as magmatic rocks blocked the flow of the Mudanjiang River, a major tributary of the Songhua River.

Covering an area of about 95 square kilometers, the lake has a length of 45 kilometers and an average depth of 40 meters, with the maximum depth reaching 60 meters under the water.

At the outlet of the lake is the Diaoshuilou Waterfall that is more than 30 meters wide and over 20 meters in height.

In the winter when temperatures reach as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius, the water on the cliff turn into a spectacular ice waterfall.

However, at the bottom of the Black Dragon Pond under the cliff, the water temperature maintains at above 10 degrees Celsius all year round.

Because of an underground hot spring, this lake amid the ice and snow never freezes.
