To improve the environment, Xu Shijun and his wife decided to plant trees at their own expense four years ago in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China.
The couple live near a desert. At first they just wanted to improve the vegetation cover outside their house. After a period of time, the small trees grew up and the couple found that they helped prevent sand encroachment. Realizing that, they started growing trees on a large area and have planted more than 300 hectares at their own expenses. They were later invited by a non-profit organization to continue planting trees.
In 2019, Xu Shijun had his left leg amputated due to a car accident, but the couple did not give up. Now they have planted more than 300,000 trees, covering an area of about 2500 hectares. "I have to plant a forest," said Xu.
