Intrepid swimmers took a plunge in a lake on the outskirts of Berlin on Tuesday for a traditional New Year's swim in the 2 degrees Celsius (35.6 degrees Fahrenheit) cold waters.

Many of the participants in the annual event, organised by the "Berlin Seals" swimming club at Lake Oranke, wore fancy dress hats and costumes.
There was no ice on the lake, which is unusual for this time of the year, but water temperatures on the windy day were still close to freezing.
