Chinese boxer Li Qian claimed a silver medal in the women's middleweight final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Sunday. It is the last medal for Team China as this Olympics comes to a close.
Li Qian is an athlete that coach Hadabateer has trained for many years. She is also one of the most promising boxers on the Chinese women's boxing team.
"To be honest, at first I thought winning the national championship was awesome enough. But after I won the national championship, I wanted more and wanted to go higher," said Li.
She noted that her coach Hadabateer thought she had been through enough setbacks and hardships in the past and it should be her turn to shine on the Olympic podium. "My coach encourages me by saying that despite the huge frustration, this is like building pyramid. A strong and solid foundation supports a steady peak on top," she added.
Li is eying the Olympic gold at the Paris Olympics in 2024. "From winning bronze at the Rio Olympics to a silver at Tokyo Olympics, my Olympic dream is still unfulfilled. I’ll try my best at the Paris Olympics to win a gold medal," said Li in a media interview after the final. This video tells the story behind Li’s Olympic journey. Click for more.
