British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Wednesday (December 12) it would not be in Britain's national interest to hold a general election, after she was challenged by an opposition lawmaker on whether she would hold a second EU referendum or an election.

Speaking in parliament, May said, "I think that a general election at this point in time would not be in the national interest, in the middle of our negotiations."May earlier promised to fight for her job in a leadership challenge triggered by her Conservative Party, saying a change could jeopardise Britain's withdrawal from the European Union.
