A new exhibit "Staging the Era" kicked off at the UCCA center for contemporary art at Beijing's 798 art zone featuring the works of Cao Fei, one of China's leading avant-garde artists.
Cao Fei's UCCA exhibit is her first major solo show in China and largest and most comprehensive career retrospective to date. It was curated with four sections, addressing different themes and locales that appear throughout her more than two decades of output: The South, The City, The workshop and The Simulation.
As one of China's most prominent contemporary artists, Cao Fei uses multimedia formats—film, video, virtual reality, and installation—to surreally depict the dramatic social changes of a globalizing China and the state of the individual under such conditions, fluidly shifting between documenting reality and creating fantasy in her art. Her work documents "both the enthusiasm and uncertainty that people go through in modern China," she said.
The exhibit will run from March 12, 2021 to June 6 at the UCCA center in Beijing. Follow our camera and experience this unique exhibit in 100 seconds！
