Australia's crafty sulphur-crested cockatoos appear to have entered an "innovation arms race" with humans, scientists say, as the two species spar over the rubbish in roadside bins.

In Stanwell Park, a beachside suburb south of Sydney, the large white birds have been using their newfound ability to challenge locals' protections of their bins, as a new study shows the birds are thwarting the escalating defences of fed-up humans.
