Thousands of students exercised adapted from Sichuan Opera during their break on Wednesday morning at the Mianyang Foreign Languages Experimental School, Southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The exercises assimilates traditional acting of Sichuan Opera, the local drama of Sichuan. It was jointly produced by the school and the local intangible cultural heritage center. Students also wore costumes with Sichuan Opera elements.
"Sichuan Opera is indigenous to Sichuan Province. As the saying dating back to the Tang Dynasty goes, 'Sichuan Opera tops the world'", said Shen Junhua, the headmaster of the school art center.
But Sichuan Opera has been facing an inheritance threat, like many other local operas. Audiences are shrinking, and young actors are in short supply.
"To preserve and hand down Sichuan Opera, our school cooperated with the intangible cultural heritage center to compose this set of easy-to-learn exercises,” Shen said. "We hope this will sow the seeds of the cultural heritage in students' hearts. "
