In early June, people from across China took part in a volunteer tree-planting event inspired by Yin Yuzhen, who has spent decades fighting desertification in northern China. Since the 1980s, Yin has planted trees on the edge of the Maowusu Desert in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to slow the advancing sands. Over more than 40 years, she has helped reclaim about 4,667 hectares of desert, turning once-barren land into thriving woodland.
