In 1999, American teacher Ronald Sakolsky sent $5,000 to Chinese farmer Yin Yuzhen after learning of her fight against desertification in the Maowusu Sandy Land in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Instead of spending the money on herself, Yin used it to buy better saplings. Decades later, those trees have transformed once-barren sands into a vast green landscape. Reunited after 27 years, the two came together in August 2026 to plant a commemorative tree.
