Hosting the 2026 Global Mayors Dialogue from September 18 to 21, Wuhan welcomed international mayors to see the Yangtze finless porpoise—the "smiling angel" now rarer than the giant panda. Thanks to the Yangtze River Protection Law, a 10-year fishing ban and joint efforts by government, scientists and local volunteers, its population rebounded to 1,426 by 2025.
