11,710 km, 10 transit modes: How China rides the rails
From a train running through a building in Chongqing to a tunnel beneath the sea in Xiamen, China's urban rail network now covers 11,710 km across 54 cities, handling 33.2 billion trips in 2025. Ten transit modes – metro, light rail, maglev, monorail and more – each tailored to local terrain and conditions, together form one vast, locally adapted network.
