HKSAR CE Carrie Lam casts her vote at polling station

Legislative Council (LegCo) election polls opened at 8:30 am. local time on Sunday in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in the first election since the improvement to its electoral system.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam casted her ballot at a polling station at 9 am. She called on the public to fulfill their civic responsibilities and vote actively for Hong Kong's long-term peace and stability.

The chief executive said she has set a target for the election to be as efficient as possible while being "fair, open and honest."

Lam said she and her colleagues will cooperate fully with the newly elected LegCo members and listen to their views to better reflect public opinions in administration and create a better future for Hong Kong.

As of 11:30 a.m., the turnout rate for the geographical constituencies was at 9.35 percent, with 418,061 voters having cast their ballots. The rate for the Election Committee constituency was 58.01 percent.

Polls opened at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and will close at 10:30 p.m. There are more than 600 polling stations across Hong Kong for about 4.5 million registered electors to cast their votes.
