Sorrentino Giuseppe, the chief engineer on the "Nan Hai Fa Xian" for 28 years, expresses his loss as he is about to retire. "This ship is my second life," he said.
"Nan Hai Fa Xian", also known as the Discovery in South China Sea, is the first FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) in the South China Sea. The FPSO was built in Italy in 1976.
In 1990, the first Chinese oilfield with an annual output of 1 million tons, Huizhou 21-1, was put into production. In the same year, the FPSO was converted to serve the Huizhou oilfield.
After serving the progressive exploration and development of Huizhou oilfield group for nearly 30 years, the FPSO will retire this year, which means that Giuseppe is going to go back to Italy. In his words, "My family is in Italy, but my friends are in China, on this boat."
