Masks are globally recognized as perhaps the easiest and most effective way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. They have prevented millions of people and medical workers from being infected. Wearing a mask outdoors is widely and officially promoted in severely affected countries.
However, common sense has been encountering unbelievable obstacles in the heavily-hit US, which leads the world in COVID-19 numbers of both confirmed infections and deaths. Prejudice, ignorance and anti-science sentiment are still rooted in some Americans’ minds. They have been brainwashed to shun the life-saving masks and fight for so-called “freedom”.
Some arrogant US politicians are keen on politicking instead of solving the crisis. US President Donald Trump, long opposed to wearing a mask in public, changed his mind and said he would have “no problem” wearing one on Wednesday. But he reiterated that he didn’t believe making masks mandatory across the country was necessary.
Can masks help prevent the spread of the coronavirus? Scientists would say yes. Masks combined with other preventive measures could help slow the spread. US politicians should stop giving wrong information to confuse Americans. Wearing masks is essential to fight the pandemic. Be rational, and take care.
