A seemingly routine sobriety check outside a restaurant quickly turned to struggling and ended in a shooting death late Friday evening in the US.
The killing of 27-year-old African American Rayshard Brooks in an encounter with two white officers on June 12 rekindled fiery protests, fueling anger just as the country was still outraged over the May 25 police custody killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Brooks tried to escape from the police officers as he failed a breath test after a few drinks celebrating his daughter’s birthday.
He was then shot down after he fired a taser gun he grabbed from the police.
The Atlanta police department fired Garrett Rolfe, the officer who fired the fatal shots. Another officer, Devin Brosnan, was placed on administrative duty. The Atlantic police chief also resigned.
The death of another black man within a month will intensify questions about how officers might have defused the situation.
