Oaxacans went back to their roots on Sunday (December 23) in the annual Christmas celebration of "The Night of the Radishes."Each year, gardeners and artists come together just before Christmas Day to exhibit various sizes and strains of intricately carved radishes.
While many of the exhibits reflect the Oaxacan culture and religious themes, this year some turned to world news, with one display honoring physicist Stephen Hawking. Long lines of spectators gathered in Oaxaca's central square for this 121st Radish Night to witness the skill of artists as they worked on their displays. Oaxaca in Mexico turns ordinary radishes into art at Christmas time, for a festival that dates back over a century.
