An attack by US forces near Baghdad International Airport killed senior Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani on January 3. US President Trump then formally responded to the attack in a speech.

Many Iranians on the streets of the Iranian capital were visibly upset and angry. Iranians flooded Tehran to mourn the assassination of senior general Qassem Soleimani on January 7. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme leader of Iran, cried openly at Soleimani’s funeral. Iran's parliament passed a resolution calling the US Department of Defense a "terrorist organization."

Iran launched second wave of surface-to-surface missiles at two US-led coalition military bases in Iraq on January 8.
