In 1969, 15-year-old Xi Jinping was sent to work at the Shaanxi Province village of Liangjiahe. During his seven years there, he lived in a cave dwelling, endured flea bites, carried manure, built dams and repaired roads.
"Every bit of happiness in the world is created by hard work," says Xi, now the Chinese president, who has made it tradition to visit ordinary people and grassroots workers. He often advocates the spirit of hard work.
